I’ve always done theatre stuff and when I saw the advert for the Young Apprentices I liked that it was a year- long thing. Then we got the opportunity to do our arts awards through the theatre and I liked that I could link creative writing with theatre. I’d been wanting to do an arts award for a long time – my mum is a careers advisor and hears about lots of opportunities so I knew about them already.
For our arts award we are organising a performance by the other Young Apprentices. Six of us are programming it and I am also directing an extract from a novel I have written, with some help from Mark Laville. It’s a post-apocalyptic story based on a new society. I love it! We are rehearsing 3 hours a week. I don’t get stage fright, I only get nervous if I don’t know what I am doing. The Arts Award is about being really creative – it gives you freedom and it’s fun as well. The group is lovely. It’s really eye-opening what we are doing and I feel like it prepares you for later life. It’s a really positive thing.
