I joined the youth theatre at the Barbican when I was 11 or 12. It was my first experience of theatre and the time when I realised my ambitions of becoming an actress and it will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first place I felt the thrill of being onstage and I knew that was what I wanted to do ultimately. I made lifelong friends in this building.
It was a place where you weren’t judged and you were celebrated for who you were. It really increased my confidence and made me believe I was valid.
