I joined the Barbican Theatre about 21 years ago. We are an issue based company. That’s an unfashionable phrase now, it’s a 70′s phrase. It sounds worthy but we make work about stuff that matters to people today.
Our theatre and dance work is issue driven and we are specialists at looking at sensitive issues through the arts. We don’t just use the arts as a vehicle to look at issues, we mould the relationship between theatre and dance and society. It’s not art for art’s sake, it’s art for societies sake. That’s important and that’s still the core of the organisation.
Access and inclusion are key parts of our work. How do you get people who don’t yet know that the arts can be a powerful tool for them and is valid for their lives, to access it? That’s always been the challenge and we’ve been part of investigating that over the years.
