BT Youth
Barbican Theatre Youth is a place to create, perform and grow — whether you’re taking your first steps in the arts or aiming for a career in the creative industries. Led by professional artists, our weekly classes are packed with opportunities to build skills, confidence, and friendships while having a lot of fun.
All sessions run in 10-week term-time blocks at our Plymouth venue, tailored to different ages and levels. With a termly membership, there’s no need to book weekly — you can try different classes and attend as often as you like. Membership is now open for Autumn, early sign-up is recommended.
Our youth classes:
BT Music (15+) – Songwriting, music production, live performance, and recording.
BT Performance (12+) – Acting, devising, movement, and storytelling.
BT Musical Theatre (8+) – Singing, acting, and movement, with two age groups to support different stages.
Masterclasses (ages vary) – One-off sessions in directing, producing, stage combat, voice work, and more.

Mondays, 5:30pm – 8:00pm | Ages 15+
BT Music is where young artists, vocalists, producers, and musicians come together to create, perform, and develop their sound. Led by industry professionals, this weekly session combines songwriting, live performance, and music production — giving you the skills, tools, and confidence to take your music further.
You’ll get hands-on experience in:
Songwriting & Composition – Write original material and explore musical storytelling.
Music Production – Create, mix, and master tracks using professional software.
Live Performance & Recording – Build stage confidence and record your own music.
Artist Development – Shape your unique sound, brand, and creative identity.
Collaboration – Connect with other young musicians, producers, and vocalists.
Whether you’re starting out or building towards a career in music, BT Music offers a supportive space to refine your craft and join a vibrant creative community.
A major performance opportunity is planned for Summer 2026 as part of a youth music festival with local and regional partners.

Step into the spotlight and explore theatre in all its forms. BT Performance develops acting, movement, and devising skills while giving you the freedom to experiment with new styles and tell your own stories. Each term focuses on a different theme or technique, led by creative professionals who challenge and support you.
What you’ll do:
Learn acting, movement, and ensemble skills
Explore genres and storytelling methods
Collaborate on original performances
Share your work at Christmas, Easter, and in a major summer 2026 production
Build confidence, creativity, and communication skills
Whether you’re just starting out or aiming to take your performance further, this is your space to grow, create, and connect.

BT Musical Theatre brings acting, singing, and movement together in one exciting class. Perfect for those who love to perform, you’ll develop technique, confidence, and stage presence while working on material that inspires you. Led by experienced professionals, sessions respond to the interests and abilities of the group.
What you’ll do:
Act through song with emotional clarity and storytelling focus
Build vocal strength, range, and control
Develop choreography, movement, and staging skills
Work in ensembles and create performance pieces
Take part in sharings and potential summer musical theatre production (funding dependent)
Open to all experience levels — whether you’re new to performing or looking to refine your skills.
