What is it?
Sound and Stage is a week-long summer school where young musicians and performers come together to create and perform an original musical — from scratch, in just five days. Working with professional practitioners, participants spend the week writing, rehearsing and bringing a brand new show to life, finishing with a performance for family and friends on the Friday afternoon.
What does the week look like?
The group splits into two creative teams who work in parallel before coming together for the final performance:
The band — up to 6 young musicians work with a music practitioner to develop their playing, learning songs, and rehearse as a live ensemble. They're the heartbeat of the show.
The cast — up to 9 young performers work with a theatre director to devise an original story, develop their characters, and shape the performance. The script, the ideas, the energy — it all comes from them.
By Friday, both groups unite for a performance on the Barbican Theatre stage, in front of an audience of family and friends.
